The island of Bornholm, Denmark, (map) is the birthplace of our great-grandparents, Jens Otto August KOFOED*and Hennea Christine Caroline PETERSEN/PEDERSEN (BOHN)*. After our great-grandmother, "Caroline" (May 1853-April 1937), came to the U.S., she kept in contact with relatives who stayed behind. Letters and photos which she kept, and her daughter after her, give us a peek into her world on Bornholm.

Some of those family photos will appear on this Web site.
For a brief background about Caroline's family, go to BOHN for the Bohn family page. Click on KOFOED for the Kofoed family.

*The spelling of both of these surnames varies from one source to another.

Jens Otto August Kofo(e)d, (Aug. 1852-1925, who Anglicized his name to "James A. Koford") was a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He worked construction projects around the Oakland-San Francisco, California, area until he moved his growing family to Vacaville (Solano county) in the mid- 1880's. I think he was interested in having a small town environment for his young children, so he bought a house with some land in that new town.

When his sons were ready for college, he moved the family to Berkeley, California, to a house he built for them on Milvia St. From there they could "walk to school" at the State University (U.C. Berkeley). His three sons, Henning, James, Jr. and Joseph, all graduated from there. Daughter Caroline (Carrie), taught at Whittier Elementary School across the street from their home. Daughter Gertrude was a nurse at Merritt Hospital (and then a teacher).
