Jens Kofod, or Kofoed, (Aug. 1852-1925, who Anglicized
his name to "James Koford") was a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He worked construction projects around the Oakland-San Francisco area until he moved his growing family to Vacaville in the mid- 1880's. I think he was interested in having a small town environment for his young children, so he built a house in that new town. When his sons were ready for college, he moved the family to Berkeley, to a house he built for them on Milvia St. From there they could "walk to school" at the State University (U.C.). His three sons, Henning, Jim and Joe, all graduated from there. Carrie, his daughter, taught at the grammar school across the street from their home. Daughter Gertrude was a nurse. |
